Checklist for Audio Podcasts

I run into folks all the time that are very well-spoken who wistfully exclaim, "If only I could write well, then I'd start blogging, too." When I hear that, I make sure that they realize that they can send their message out there without writing a word, if they are just willing to record themselves in a podcast. If that's something that's been on your to-do list, but you just don't know how to get started, then take a look at my "Checklist for Audio Podcasts."

Google Search in Gmail Gets Smarter
Share |

gmail_logo.PNGBack in April 2009, Google introduced Google Search, a little-known feature in Gmail labs that allows users to search Google without ever leaving the Gmail interface. Today, Google announced that it is improving this feature with a number of useful new functions. Google Search in Gmail can now access most of the more advanced features of Google Search, including dictionary definitions, spelling corrections, calculations, weather and local search. In addition, Google is now also highlighting these new features through an additional button in the Gmail toolbar.

google_search_gmail.pngWhile this might look like a very minor new feature, Google Search in Gmail actually turns out to be quite useful. Being able to search Google's index directly from Gmail without having to leave the site is nice, but what makes this feature work is the ability to quickly copy and paste the search results into your email. You can choose to copy the full search result (including the description of the site) or just the link. Sadly, though, Google Search in Gmail doesn't allow you to search Google Maps and easily copy and paste a map into an email message.

To enable Google Search in Gmail, go to Gmail Labs and look for "Google Search" (around the middle of the page).

Search-Engine-Marketing

Image by Danard Vincente via Flickr

Last week, I conducted a Webinar for those of you that have very little of something that marketers usually need a lot of: cash. Luckily, search marketing is one place where cash is optional, at least when you take the steps that I propose. If you're a skinflint, a cheapskate, or a tightwad, just like me, check out the free one-hour Skinflint Search Marketing Webinar, where I help you succeed in search marketing for my favorite price: free.

What’s your Facebook fan worth?
Share |

facebook-fanAccording to a recent study released by Vitrue last week, Facebook Fans are valued at $3.60 each in earned media for brands. Not everyone was happy with the study and a few even poked holes in the formula and assumptions made.  I also wrote about it here if you’re interested. Despite the formula flaws, I do think it’s a good start to something many marketers are looking for – i.e. what’s the return on investing budget and human capital on a Facebook fan page? In fact, working on the brand side for many years, this question arises daily.  And, the reality is that we may never know the true value of a fan because human behavior changes all the time and technology isn’t quite there yet; not to mention the possible privacy implications.  I do feel that calculating fan value needs to involve more than just impressions.  For now though, I am okay with that.

Here is a quick recap of the formula used to calculate the valuation:

1M impressions x 2 posts x 30 days = 60M impressions
60M impressions / 1000 x $5 CPM = $300,000
$300,000 x 12 months = $3.6M
$3.6M / 1M fans = $3.60

Using this same formula, I did some quick research and found 10 high profile brands and calculated their fan value. You will be surprised and some of the results:
